I'm not exactly a fan of Carmack, but I do find the stuff he does for rocketry extremely interesting.
But revolutionizing computer gaming and pioneering aspects of 3D realtime graphics programming is not interesting? To a fellow programmer?!
99% of what Carmack does is simply optimize the obvious path in current state-of-the-art. He's the God of clean implementation and finding local optima, to roughly quote one of his peers, but that's really about it. People ascribe to him a sort of mythical transcendent genius that quite simply doesn't fit the person. I mean, yes his work defines top-notch. But frankly the most *truly* revolutionary thing he developed was Commander Keen, oddly enough. Almost everything else has been largely amazing implementation from Doom on out to Quake III (I need to do more reading before I'd be willing to say that about Doom 3, however).
Also, I fucking hate Objectivist wankers.
The rocketry stuff he's doing is really, truly interesting for me to read about and I think might really put his name in the history books.

Uh... what? Carmack's reverse (we're still waiting on SB's Reverse, I guess...)? Client-side prediction for multiplayer? Multi-texturing in a game engine? In-game command modules for 3d-hardware accelerated games? Mods? You can claim these technologies would have come along with or without him, but the truth of the matter is he was the one putting them in, driving the tech, pushing the hardware manufacturers (and Microsoft's DirectX group) in these directions.
Jesus Christ, the entire real-time 3D PC (and console) games industry has been so wholly shaped by this guy (both in software and hardware) that it's hard to find an area he hasn't influenced, or had a direct hand in developing. I'm not saying the guy's a god, but to dismiss him as a competent implementer would be an insult, if it weren't more revealing of the ignorance of the person making the characterization.
Maybe it's just me, but "First guy to take an algorithm out of the journals and throw it in a game" doesn't strike me as a Holy Shit! kind of thing. |
