Maybe it's too easy to criticize because I've never written netcode but how can people *WHO ARE GETTING PAID* not know to a) use UDP, b) use Asynchronous Sockets for your client and Overlapped I/O for your server, and c) minimize amount of information sent where possible?
You would think that MMORPG programmers would understand that netcode is MORE IMPORTANT than graphics for their product, and that most of the physics/AI energies of a 'normal' game can be transferred to it - but in many products there is little evidence of this happening and to some extent the opposite. [/rant]
Speaking as a networker and not a programmer it's usually because they do most of their testing on shiny, clean 100Mb switched networks and can't comprehend the vast difference when you push the client out onto the other end of slow, noisy dial-up connection. (Or how latency and bandwidth are very different animals.)
I'll agree that people writing applications specifically for netplay should know better, but having watched more than a few apps crush themselves under the weight of ineffecient network design because the people writing the code a) didn't know better or b) didn't have the resources/time/whatever to test and figured since it ran so nice on the LAN it would be fine on the Internet I'm not surprised at all when I see stuff like this happen. The real trick is convincing them that it's their problem when they start complaining about 'issues' on the network. Bitches. |
