I watched Blade runner for maybe only the third time last night and I'm really beginning to fall in love with Dick's vision. So, I'm looking for a little Dick to hold in my hands in bed before I go to sleep at night. But I'm really new to the world of Dick, anyone have any good suggestions other than Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep?
I enjoyed this one, obviously. Most of his later stuff tends to be pretty heavily influenced by Gnostic themes. Dick was improving as a writer right up until his death; the Valis trilogy represents some of his most brilliantly surreal work.
The five-volume collection of short stories is a real page turner, and The Man in the High Castle is the Grandaddy of all parallel universe Nazi stories. The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch is one of my favorites, as are Ubik and Eye in the Sky. Be aware that most of his pulp books from the 50s and 60s were written in a 24-hour meth-addled craze, so they tend to be a bit rough. That's part of their appeal, of course. |
