This is an old article, but worth reading. Let us never wring our hands and wonder, "Why are the Democrats so goddamned stupid??!!!!!!" ever again.
I hate the Democratic Party more than anything else in this world. What caused the mainstream liberal body of our country to lose the strength and charisma of, say, FDR? I guess I lean left a little, but watching the Democratic Party in action is like watching a sped wearing the jersey of your favorite football team jerk off all over himself in the cafeteria. I could say that I at least admire the Republican party for staunchness even if many of their numbers are loony, but lately they've been infected by the same pussy-ass virus that the Democrats contracted some decades ago. Disagreement and the battle of wits is the envisioned platform for all three of our federal branches. Lively debate over issues is life-blood to Democracy. But lately, as I've said elsewhere, we argue about who is arguing and about how we should not be arguing anymore, all to serve a political goal well outside the real function of government. They should cease calling them parties, but "teams" picked on the playground of youth because that's exactly how arbitrary they are (with a few notable extremist exceptions). Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating extremism, but tenacity. Even a moderate can actively assert his moderate views.
As far as the Democrats go I remember reading something some years ago during one of the Clinton terms. There was some party the DNC was holding for Clinton and Bob Dylan was performing. At the end of one of the songs, they coordinated a jet flyby (cliche red, white, and blue smoke trails and all), one old Berkeley leftist turned to someone and said, "Those are our planes now, aren't they?" Only it wasn't out of a sense of pride, but the realization that he had won the power, but lost the conviction. |
