Basic info here. This show is objectively not good as Creexul would put it - episodes tend to be formulaic (new world, children threatened, Lisa uses Kigenjutsu (sko Force martial arts), Kaze shows up to blow Ifrit or likewise out of his demon gun), the plot is perfectly standard, the characters aren't breaking any new ground. Technically it's proficient - blending standard animation and CG in a rough-and-ready but overall successful way, the animation is high quality and the orchestral score is outstanding. There's a lot of repeated footage when Kaze shoots his gun or Lisa performs kigenjutsu attacks or Ai gets her hair pulled by a chocobo. But overall this show is more than the sum of its parts.
Why? Although the plot en toto is predictable as fawk, the details are crazy great. The new worlds are freaky and Kaze's and Lisa's interactions, fighting styles, and catalogs of (admittedly predictable) secrets are very nicely handled; the main bad guy is super retarded but nobody cares about him when Kaze's nemesis, the White Swordsman, comes around. There are lots of familiar features for longtime FF fans - Cid, chocobos, Omega Weapons, de facto summons, kewl toys for everyone, etc - that link up to the greater FF body of work, and pull the show into its context. In fact FF:U is paced, structured, and likeable in much the same way as the FF games. But not much more than likeable. |
