Click on the Sabra & Shatilla Massacre section and start reading. indictsharon.net builds an excellent, well-supported, and non-hysterical (unlike the thousands of angry screaming Islamist websites out there) case against Sharon the just might convince you. What it boils down to as far as my limited understanding goes is that he oversaw the massacre (possibly including rape) of anywhere from 700-3,500 (mostly like a little over a thousand, if the Red Cross is to be believed) Palestinians/Lebanese Shi'ites, almost all civilians. An Israeli commission on the incident found him responsible, for what it's worth - his role was leader of the IDF forces that surrounded the camp in question and barred entry/exit while a Lebanese force marched in and performed the slaughter personally. When asked about what to do with a group of 40 civilians in the camp being held at gunpoint, he replied, 'do the will of God.'

There is little to no mainstream media coverage of this incident - most reporters going in in the last five to ten years have stated that it is impossible to get any info on the topic anymore from anyone (Salon had a reporters article on this experience up recently but I'm afraid I don't have the link).

From 1981-1983 Sharon served as Minister Of Defense, a post from which he was forced to resign after a his own government found him indirectly responsible for allowing Christian Phalangists to perpetrate what happened at Sabra and Shatila during the Lebanon War. The anti-Israel crowd who would like to see Sharon indicted on war crimes consistently fails to mention the name of Elie Hobeika, the leader of the men who carried out the massacre (in retaliation for a slaughter the previous year that also left several hundred dead).

It's interesting to note that Yasser Arafat played a key role in the same comflict (and was later awarded a Nobel peace prize), yet the anti-Semitic left rarely utter a word of protest in his direction.

Wasn't aware of Hobeika's existence in so much as I didn't know his specific name(I know about the Phalangists). Both of them ought to be indicted, then (duh). Arafat's being awarded a Nobel peace prize was a fucking travesty I agree.

I'm not terribly biased once I have all the facts. But there is a very good case that a) the USS Liberty was deliberately destroyed by a nation that b) is now lead by a warcriminal. My (Jewish, for those who missed the prior post) ex would tell you that I'm not anti-Semite in the least, but I have terribly little sympathy for the nation of Israel due to their government/miliarty. Most French people will tell you they love Americans but hate the American government - I take a similar stance towards Israel.
