Kyle Turley to the Rams and Mike Martz saying it's like picking up Marshal Faulk. More evidence that Martz is a moron? Do we need more evidence? What do you think, Jonesy?
The deal with Turley was just a complete mess.
On one hand, he's a great right tackle. Made the end-of-year All Pro (though not Pro Bowl) team for the AP two years ago. On the other, he's an average to slightly above average left tackle. He dominated Simeon Rice the first time out and got his ass handed to him the second. He had some other rough games, statistically, as well.
On one hand, he has fired the team up on numerous occasions when they were seriously lagging ass. Implies that there's some leadership there. On the other hand, he could NOT get it through his fucking skull that Brooks will back up if he starts getting some serious pressure in front of him and even remotely adjust his game accordingly. Yeah, it's Brooks fucking up and Brooks needs to be screamed down by the staff for doing it, but react to the situation, Kyle! He couldn't adjust his game and cover for his teammate. Or he wouldn't, anyway.
He was in the last year of his deal, so wherever he went the team that got him had to ensure that they could sign him long term. But all he really cared about was the guaranteed money placed in front of him. He'd be slugging down shots with Grumpy, Jr. in Cincy right now if Mike Brown ponied up a $13 mill signing bonus. He was psychotic in reacting to Damien Robinson attacking his QB two years ago, sure, but then again four other members of the o-line did *nothing* as Robinson had Brooks in the camel clutch. He had to go to anger management for that, but when Chris McAllister tore off Donte Stallworth's helmet in November and threw it into the end zone not a word was really made of it, and McAllister got nowhere near the fine or press.
It's about as complicated as it could get. You can make the argument that he got royally fucked while in N.O. by the staff and/or the league, or you could say that he was a vacant chucklefuck and brought on all the drama that surrounded him. The thing that turned me over to the "ship his ass out of here" side of things was that he went on local and national radio for four straight days and just vented. He ripped the shit out of the organization and the staff for an entire week. Whatever his value was before that, it was slashed when he wouldn't shut the fuck up. As a Saints fan more than a Turley fan, that's just a punk move that lowers what the team could get for him.
But anyway, getting a 2nd rounder in 2004 as opposed to this year doesn't bug me quite so much as the Saints already had two firsts, a second and a third this year. This draft doesn't seem so incredibly deep that six picks on the first day is, without question, the way to go. It could be, I guess, but we're now in a good spot in the draft for the next two seasons. So we've got that going for us. Which is nice.
