Trail of the (sic) Dead - the reviews say they sound like Fugazi or Jawbox... all I'm saying is, if Jawbox sounded like this, then they would have sucked and been boring, too. I've heard two tracks of Trail of Dead and they both sound more like acceptable emo than they sound like good post-hardcore. (Make that three tracks as of this instant... also boring). Great band name, though.
GYBE- on the one hand I appreciate this kind of music, but on the other hand I'm a little confused as to why it's getting popular now when this exact type of thing has been present on college campuses since the 1970s. It's not really "pop" music, y'know? How can we criticize it? Does it do what it's trying to do? I guess so. But it takes so long to get where it's going that my attention wanders. That's really my problem, I suppose.
If you try to get PGMG off of Direct Connect all you get is the Smiths song. So, I haven't heard them yet. Their descriptions sounded like something I might like, though.
For those who like instrumental bands, I heartily recommend Midwest Product (Listen to "Still Love In The Midwest"). They are fucking great - my constant-rotation disc of the month. I am biased (I know Ben Mullins and have shared bills with these guys), but when that video-game synth meets with the New Order guitar sound you will be forced to swallow a bitter, gooey load of their retro-futurism. |
