This is probably a dozen years too late, but I was pretty irritated that I didn't get to hunt down Freeman in Opposing Forces. What a load of crap. That game sucked. (Also: for the first time since Doom II, I had hall-of-mirrors errors. Only unlike Doom II, this happened in the actual game and not in some gay mod. I didn't even know that a 3D engine could have that problem.)
I remember that. There was a part in "On a Rail" with that hall of mirrors stuff on a floor, but only if you saw it from a certain location. It's a mapping error though, not really an engine error.
I encountered it in a room full of boxes with a pool of water on the floor and a dangling electrical cable (live of course) over it. Dunno if that's the "On a Rail" level or not.
In any event, in Doom II, the error occured when a texture was missing and the engine rendered it as a patch of screen that didn't update. My experience with Quake II level creation was that if I left a texture out, I could see out into polygon space or into the next room. I figured then that HOM was dead and was pretty surprised to find it in Opposing Forces. So I think it's got to be at least partly the engine's fault, not just a mapping error. |
