I also want this to be blown out of proportion and that SARS will be the punch line to lame jokes by June. I really hope yours (and Fussbett's) data and research is sound and good, I hope the contracted cases and fatalities will be minimal and this will be squashed before it gets out of hand.
All bullshit and nipple tweaking aside, no one believes that either Toronto or the Canadian goverment isn't handling the crisis with world-class professionalism. The concern among those I know is that this was a serious potential pandemic even before the first confirmed case in Toronto. Now that the Canadian cases are numbered in the double digits there is already a foregone conclusion (to some) that the entire continent will be infected in short order, barring draconian quarantines that will never happen.
I live just outside Chicago, we are pretty much the national transportation hub (planes, trains and trucks). I've a friend that is lead public health and sanitation investigator for two major suburbs; she tells me that they are all expecting (and preparing for) the worst. They are not over-reacting; they have the data and see little to be optimistic about. This is not the bubonic plague mind you, but this is far more disturbing then the swine flu.
A few years ago we had a long weekend of 105°+ days and it killed off better then 370 people (elderly and homeless), the county's morgues were overtaxed and the dead had to be stored in loaned refrigerated tractor-trailers. It was eerie as fuck to see meatpacking trucks lined up, filled with the dead waiting to be processed. I don't wish shit like that on Toronto.
