I'm looking for a suitable supplement to Pitchforkmedia. I guess any publication that covers a broad area of indie rock would suit my personal tastes. I've looked into CMJ, mostly for their College Radio Top 200 charts, but it was reported that they've been falsified to a certain extent which makes it seem like a whoring Rolling Stone type operation. Can anyone recommend any particular magazine?
Check out The Big Takeover. It follows the general scheme of most indie mags: interviews and long reviews in the front, short reviews in the back. What sets it apart? First is its sheer size: the last issue was a little over 300 pages and probably contains about 1000 short reviews and about 15 each of the long reviews and interviews. Second is the total dedication that its writers have for music; it really shines through in their writing, which is almost too earnest sometimes (eg its tagline, "music with heart".) In a sense it's kind of the antithesis of pitchfork, where "the sound of my own voice" often vies with "music" for the central focus of reviews. Coverage is broad, even more so than pitchfork: it expands into the punk arena but all the indie stuff is covered as well.
Also good is The Wire, a british mag which focuses on experimental music. Writing is extremely good and coverage is again very broad but in a different arena than TBTO. It includes a lot of stuff that only british people seem to like such as world music, but the more experimental side of indie gets quite a bit of attention.
