New OpenBSD speeds downloads, games significantly. Especially BitTorrent. by Senor Barborito 05/18/2003, 7:45am PDT
As seen here. The problem? The way TCP ACKs are prioritized by asynchronous DSL lines, and from the sound of those of you complaining about BitTorrent - many cable lines as well.

The following is a traffic graph without OpenBSD:

The following is a traffic graph after OpenBSD's packetfilter has been used to reprioritize TCP ACK (acknowledge) packets:

This should also be applicable to reprioritizing, say all UDP packets (games), far in excess of other packets such that one can download or *ahem* serve content without their gameplay being affected.

If anyone wants a basic 'how to setup' for OpenBSD and an old computer (Pentium 200, etc.) I would be more than happy to help set this up - if multiple people want it I don't mind writing a simple how-to. I still need to spend some time figuring out this altqueue shit, but what Hartmeier (the principle programmer for PacketFilter) has written here should be more than enough to get started.
