I put all the prog rock I have into a special Prog Rock folder... by Zseni 09/10/2004, 7:58pm PDT
...then I marked it "hidden." (I should have deleted it.)

It's mostly Alan Parsons Project and Anthony Phillips' earlier albums, but still. Sheesh. Prog is pretty deadly stuff. It's hard to listen to it now without thinking of "Labyrinth" and the MST3K "Pod People" space music riffs. On the other hand, I think prog is the natural musical ally of fantasy novels and and people who claim they are spiritual but not religious and erudite board games and those elaborate art-puzzle-contest books that enjoyed a brief spate of popularity in the early 80's.

So what's the deal with progressive rock? Like many things that call themselves progressive it appears to have marched straight up the ivory tower and is refusing to come out. Any serious prog listeners out there with some recs besides deleting the folder? Comments on the function of prog in one's musical spheres?
