| I suspect this is a very calculated move on the part of Sharon. The reasoning behind the road map is that if the Palestinians get their state, then the bombings/Al Qaeda will stop and Israel will be safe. Call me a jaded pessimist, but this will never happen and Sharon knows it. However, going along with the proposal would make Israel look more the victim the next time Islamic Jihad takes out a restaurant. After a few such bombings (maybe only 2 if the second hits a school), Sharon will be able to cry "we tried the peace stuff, and they still kill us. They simply can't be reasoned with. CRY HAVOC, AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!!!!" And then Israel will rain down the wrath of Yaweh upon the West Bank, and probably with more world support than in the past (after all, they did try the peace thing).
Honestly, I don't believe the true powers in Palestine, the militant leaders (including Arafat), can be reasoned with. They're not fighting and killing because they've been treated too harshly or have been repressed too long, or even because they have nothing better to do with their lives. They're fighting because they are unwilling to take responsibility for the future. All their doing now is shouting "I'm pissed at the world and if you don't fix it for me, I'll kill you", not terribly unlike a teenager shouting "life sucks and if it doesn't get better, I'm going to kill myself". You know what? Life sucks, get a fucking helmet. Now, you can go run and blow stuff up and justify your current plight, or you can step back and say "whoa, this whole thing is really fucked up, how do I deal with it?" Barbie and I both eventually said that to ourselves (myself a little later than he did) while sitting in church with our fundamentalist Christian families listening to some nut from some seminary school tell us all about how we are at war with the secular world. When you end up at any sort of major crossroad in life, you do one of two things: kill yourself, or deal with it. As far as I'm concerned, the Palestinians are just killing themselves, and taking a lot of innocent people with them (yes, I understand that a lot of Palestinian Civies are getting killed, but having my neighbor hit my dog with his car is no justification for shooting another neighbor's cat. Since it was the Palestinians that started the uprising with several bombings a few years ago, and since they continue the bombings even after Israel indicates that it will go with the road map, the burden is on the Palestinians' shoulders). Life sucks for the Palestinians. It really, REALLY sucks. How can they deal with it? They could start by asking themselves "is blowing myself up really going to change anything for the better?" I'm sorry, I just don't see Arafat, or any of the other militants, seriously asking themselves that question. Believing in a faith that openly supports killing just about everything on the planet doesn't help much either. Cyrris |
