I, too, ask of Barbie to expand on what he means by saying that Fallout Tactic will shake my faith in games. I mean, I owned a Jaguar at one point.
I ended up buying FF Tactics and the first Age of Wonders (which was at the Mall, just not the second one). I haven't installed AoW yet, but my first impressions of FFT are:
o OK, the first battle had me controlling one guy. The other 7 or 8 people in the battle were computer controlled. I know it's just the first battle, but this strikes me as the game behaving like that friend who wants to show you the new games for his system, but he won't let you take the joystick. He plays them while you watch him play. I make it a point to never be that guy, and I kind of wish that Square thought the same.
o The second battle I lost because I didn't use any actual tactics. I can't help it: when I am playing a football game I have a sick curiosity to see if a play that works once is a "money" play, and in these squad-based tactics game I need to see if I get my ass handed to me when I try to play it mindlessly. So this is a big point in FFT's favor.
o Question: Is it possible to make & name your own guys at some point? I selected five kids from a pool of seven to go with me on the second battle. Which is fine, but I wonder how much customization there will eventually be.
o The guy who carts away the princess at the end of the first battle basically extending his middle finger to "God" before he flies off on that furry is one of the best comments I've read in a game in a long time. I can't imagine that people who dislike organized religion ended up hating that guy quite as much as Square thought we all would at the end of that board.
