Yes. Completely.
I mentioned this on Slashdot once and had a legion of AMD zealot faggots out for blood so I tend to avoid saying it but they are quirky and fragile little bastards. Once P4 2.4s became dirt cheap and the 850 was everywhere, I never looked back.
If you had (relatively) unlimited funds and wanted to put together a new MB/CPU/RAM configuration, what would be on your shopping list, in the 2.4 ghz range? I mean name brand, model number, etc?
Thanks.
This is the core of my own next (Doom ]I[) box. The theme is an Intel 800FSB CPU on an intel 875 chipset. Both the boards in question are loaded to the point of making most the PCI slots unessential.
MB: Asus P4C800 Deluxe is pretty exciting as is the Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra. (Asus is my first choice)
CPU: Pentium 4 2.6GHz, 512KB, 800MHz or 3.0GHz, 512KB, 800MHz.
RAM: 2 or 4 sticks of 512MB PC3200 DDR400 RSM from Crucial or Corsair. I have had nothing but good experiences with crucial but everyone is saying currently that Corsair is the best.
Next generation boards will be based on PCI Express with fibre channel and FireWire 800 onboard but nothing like that will be available in the near future.
I only rebuild my machine at home every two years or so, and it's hard to keep up with what people are saying. I'm neck deep in digital SLR camera forums and LCD projector forums right now, I don't think my brain could handle trying to wade through the latest in the Athlon v. Pentium wars on top of that. Both of those boards look great.
Thanks again - I appreciate it. |
