FEARDOTCOM, or, why dumb people shouldn't be sent to the video store. by Lizard_King 06/15/2003, 12:39pm PDT
So the title was kind of a dead giveaway that one was headed for a bad movie. Which would turn most people away from picking up the box. But unfortunately the emissary in question lacks judgement in several key areas, possibly due to the absence of a y chromosome.

Subsequently, I was subjected to the crap festival that is feardotcom. It has all of the key elements of bad modern horror.

-Rips off other bad movies (Ringu, Hellraiser 2, etc) and does so clumsily and usually with comical results.
-Relies on the quaint insertion of angelic children in gruesomely aggressive roles.
-Has ridiculous conception of the internet, both on a graphical and practical level, including a "theory" that is CENTRAL to the plot in which beings can become pure energy on the internet blah blah blah.
-Lame plot twists that involve absurdly set "rules for survival" and pisspoor decision-making exclusively for survival.

Bonuses:
-Uses utterly revolting Madagascar (giant) cockroaches A LOT.
-Asks us to believe that female protagonist would dive into stagnant water in an abandoned industrial structure and then, all in the same breath, find a long-dead corpse and carry it out. Yay for having no respect for your audience and showing it.

Finally, it is yet another one where a decent villain is the focus of the plot on a long enough timeline, but you realize you wanted him to win all along because those pursuing him are either a)homicidal, exceptionally sadistic electrospirit things, or b) idiot generic good guys.

Alas, it is far too derivative to be considered a classic in a bad way. It's just bad.
