Manitoba: Up In Flames by Fullofkittens 06/19/2003, 10:38am PDT
I read a review once of Sloan's disc Smeared that described Sloan as lacking their own sound, but making up for it by having their album sound like a compilation of cool songs by your favorite bands (note: not true of Sloan's later discs which are unified, and also happen to be amazing if you like that kind of thing BUT ANYWAY).

Manitoba's Up In Flames takes this idea a step further by sounding like a compilation of my favorite indie post-rock bands (My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, DCFC) being remixed by the electronic artists on Warp Records (Squarepusher, Aphex Twin)... usually sounding like more than one of the remixers got their hands on different parts of the songs. Generally, what Manitoba ends up with (this is a one-man band) is a wall of sound containing 30% droney acoustic guitars, 20% flangey bass, 30% chimey synth leads buried deep left and right, 50% sputtery beats a la pick-your-favorite-IDM guy, 40% semi-wordless vocals with lots of backwards reverb a la My Bloody Valentine, and 30% super loud analog synth chords a la Stereolab. That adds up to a mix that's 200% overloaded with cool sounds. Then he gets to the bridge and breaks it down with glitchily sampled marimba and glockenspiel, with downtempo recycled drums.

I listened to this on the bus this morning on my headphones, and I can't wait to get home and listen to it with something with better response: I'm sure there's 3 or 4 instruments I couldn't hear in there because they were hiding below and above what my headphones can play.

Definitely something to check out. The bomb tracks, for "internet perusal", if you will, are "Hendrix with Ko" and "Every Time She Turns Around It's Her Birthday"
