Pitchfork lies: the Decemberists' record isn't very good.
MTV2 tells the truth...for a change: Longwave's The Strangest Things is just like an hour long version of the single, which is good enough that I recommend stealing it via internet. If you can get it cheap or something you could buy it.
Pitchfork pretty much nailed the Radiohead review, their new one is like a career-spanning compilation of B-sides that should've been on the records they were recorded with, which reminds me: if you can get a hold of the My Iron Lung EP or just find the song "Trickster" off it...that's the best song they ever recorded.
Was surprised to see there are new Bill Hicks CDs out...LoveLaughterandTruth and Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1. Love's the only one with new material, Flying Saucer Tour is this kind of inexplicable thing: a live show where he completely loses everybody and never really gets them back...weird they'd pick that one to release, it's strange to laugh at these jokes and the audience is just sitting there getting pissed off like in that old John Cage "Not Playing the Piano" concert. I mean he loses the audience a lot in the other records, and I have live shows of his where some people walk out, but instead of turning around and hooking them back in with some easy "dick jokes" he just keeps pushing them until they start hissing at him. It's pretty strange.

...now's a good time to hit the used CD bin and look for a copy of Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights, which is still the best record of last year, and is still in my CD player like 9 months later. |

I think one misses a lot without his "stage presence". Oh well. NT by Lizard_King 06/23/2003, 10:15pm PDT
You're right, he's much more animated than you expect listening to the records. NT by jeep 06/26/2003, 2:43pm PDT
