Pitchfork pretty much nailed the Radiohead review, their new one is like a career-spanning compilation of B-sides that should've been on the records they were recorded with, which reminds me: if you can get a hold of the My Iron Lung EP or just find the song "Trickster" off it...that's the best song they ever recorded.

Desperate for human company with veronica gone two days (read: 2 days of effective solitary confinement) back on Friday (and she'll be gone for another full week from today) I actually went to the mall rather than pester anybody else on my IM list, poor bastards . . .

Picked up Hail to the Thief while there - I'll generally agree with the B-sides statement except on a couple tracks. Namely, Punch-up at a wedding is very, very much an A-track. Right about the time Thom hits 'You had to piss on our parade' the song (and indeed entire album) hits this moment of musical perfection. I don't know if it works when you listen to the song as a single - but the weird way the song opens first into something from New Orleans and then fakes a dodge into outright horror/goth for a bit is just freaky, and it sets the spike for that one moment absolutely perfectly.

I understand why he had such an emotional reaction to There There, but it doesn't grow on me like the other tracks do. It's a gorgeous surface but it doesn't feel like there's depth there as is present in the more experimental stuff.

Anyways, big LAN party tomorrow and then Trail of the Dead on the 25th - I'll give a report on both.

I think one misses a lot without his "stage presence". Oh well. NT by Lizard_King 06/23/2003, 10:15pm PDT NEW
You're right, he's much more animated than you expect listening to the records. NT by jeep 06/26/2003, 2:43pm PDT NEW
