Front 242's "Pulse" does not suck by curst 07/01/2003, 1:15pm PDT
Finally, some industrial that BLOWS AWAY, as BDR once put it. Well, at least "Pulse" comes close to doing so. I prefer my industrial tunes to be a little more harsh, and "Pulse" backs away from the really hard edge that "Off" and "Up Evil" had, but on balance it's still enjoyable.

My first impression, admittedly, was "WTF, is this a DJ mix?" One song blends into the next blends into the next blends... Only a couple of tunes have definite beginnings and endings. There are also no vocals until track 6, giving the beginning part of the album a real ravey feel. It isn't bad, but it's not the F242 I've been in love with for so many years. It certainly doesn't stand out from the electronica crowd to any noticable extent.

Another slight problem is that the CD only lists the names of 12 tracks, but there are 20 tracks on the actual disc. So while I'm in total spooging orgasmic love with track 6 (which is reminiscent of "Serial Killers Don't Kill Their Girlfriends" thanks to the heavy drums, but has a much more frenetic melody), I have no idea what it's actually called. I'm going to assume it's "Triple X Girlfriend" since it gets me so horny.

Having gotten over those two things that had me blinking in confusion at first, I quickly learned to like it. Again, if I had to complain, I would start by wondering where the heavy metal influence that surfaced on the classic "Up Evil" went. I'd probably toss in a :( to hammer home my disappointment. But I don't really miss it that much. If you were to create a hybrid of "Off" and "Tyranny For You", you'd get "Pulse". It's got the synth sounds of "Tyranny" and (on the better songs) the harsh drums of "Off".

Sadly, there are a few tunes that boast the same bland, nothing-new drumming that we've heard from the industrial world for the past twenty+ years now, so "Pulse" is far from perfect. Still, F242 fans should have no problems getting into it. If nothing else, it beats the everloving shit out of that "Headhunter" remix album.
