They were pretty good friends early on, and there's some speculation that Heinlein talked to Hubbard about his ideas for Stranger in a Strange Land and Hubbard went on to start Scientology afterwards.
If you read Stranger, watch for the parts where he talks about how religions can't exist without false "levels of mystery" and "conning people out of money."
They had a falling out later on, my guess was Heinlein was an atheist and his work was almost always intended as satire, and he was maybe a little pissed that Hubbard started what is essentially a pretty cynical scam...not that the other religions don't have dubious origins themselves.
I'll go drink that hemlock now.
