One of those error threads a microsoft guy said to clean the CD, the CD rom drive. run scandisk and defrag. SORRY SIR I ALREADY GOT THIS "IT'S YOUR COMPUTER THAT'S THE PROBLEM" BS FROM EA OVER C&C: GENERALS! When EVERY other game works fine with my cd-drive, the problem is YOUR GAME.
Dumb question -- you're not installing from a drive which is a CD-RW drive, are you? When I looked up the RoN thing I found some Usenetters encountering difficulties installing their legitimate, store-bought games (not RoN specifically) when they tried to use their CD-RW as the install drive. It probably will have no effect, but it may be worth trying for the hell of it if you've got a normal CD or DVD drive around.
I feel your pain here. I was all set to buy Freelancer a while back when I learned that some drivers that nVidia released in late May weren't compatible with it -- what I read indicated the thing would install and install only. I tried to go backwards and install earlier drivers, but that just caused some other problems for me. I'm at the point now where before I go out to buy a new game I have to run through Google Groups' archives to see what problems I can expect to run into. And it's not like I'm running some sort of blue-laser DVD-II drive in the thing, either. All my equipment is very standard.
