No need. (E/N warning!) by FoK 07/06/2003, 10:35pm PDT
Dear god... how do I put this delicately? How's this: I PASSIONATELY HATE THAT FUCKING EP.

A brief history:

The Fullerenes broke up for the first time in 2000, right after releasing Better Dating Through Technology. We broke up for two reasons: #2 was that our drummer and musical tiebreaker had quit to be a lame married nonrocker. #1 was that I was leaving Michigan to start my illustrious career giving handjobs (handjobs) in the alleyways of New York City. So, we sold like 100 Better Datings and called it quits. I left a good 6-7 demos lying behind that never got really recorded, but hey, we broke up. No such luck.

A few months later, I get an IM from the other guy from the Fullerenes asking if he could use one of the songs I demo'd for his new band. Sure... why not?

Come May 2001, I am broke as fuck and need to move back home to make some money before I can finish school. The band my buddy formed is playing (gasp!) *all* the demos, and (double-gasp!) the other guys in the band assume that he wrote them all. Shit. "Guys... is it okay if I join your band?" "Well, okay... as long as you don't start telling people what to do." Okay, so now I'm the keyboardist/2nd backing vocalist in a band that formed around my songs. They have 2 originals (out of 8) that are not by me. But I will not be a part of this band if I start telling people what to do.

This bad situation gets worse when the recording of the T Boy EP begins: the same guy wants to record and produce the records, since he never got to do that when it was "my band." So, he records all the instruments and sings all the vocals, and does the mix, I play keyboards. He asks me for critiques on the mixes and gets REALLY pissed if I say anything negative. I have gone from being Billy Corgan on one record to being Darcy Wretsky on the next.

So, (surprise), it comes out, and everybody is asking me why it doesn't sounds as good as our previous discs. Beats me!

Yes, I am still bitter about this. The band finally broke down when I insisted on having more control over the new songs I was writing for the group ("I want to sit in on the mixdown." "FUCK YOU. I AM QUITTING THIS BAND."). Bad scene all around. You can see why I'm attracted to the laptop rock nowadays.

So anyways, that EP sucks lumpy wad. If you want the definitive Fullerenes disc, you can buy the Better Dating Through Technology disc from our mp3.com website. In Geek Rock terms, it is that dog's Retreat From The Sun to the EP's new Anna Waronker disc. Not to worry - all the money we make from that site goes to that other guy. Three tracks from the 5-song Temporary Boyfriend EP are also available. Here are the other two.
