"But but but starving artists!" my ass - artists do it for the love or they do it on commision by wealthy people or they don't do it. No, it's not that I'm a thief, and it's certainly not that I've never produced anything artistic anybody would pay for (seeing as I've been offered), it's that I don't believe that thoughts and ideas should ever be used to extort money. Goods and services, yes, but that's it. That's something tangible you can hold onto. Our current system of 'intellectual property' already has destroyed art by reducing it to a commodity. That kind of spiritual death is far worse than any kind of economic benefit our current system provides. Music? Live performance. In real life that's where many artists make the bulk of their income, even blippier ones - by entertaining the patrons of whatever establishment your music fits the mood of, you've economically adopted a service model, and you're in much better shape.

Since I know most of you would rather hear 'crickets' than any more out of me, and God knows I'd certainly rather hear them than any response you're going to splutter out I'll now put the 'crickets' soundtrack back over the loudspeakers.

Be sure to tip the crickets on the way out, lads - they're really something worth listening to, eh?

There are a couple of points here that are muddled, one by you, and one by the current paradigm in the marketplace. #1 (confused by you) is the patronage system... artists that have worked on a "pure" patronage system (which is, in 2003, the university system) tend to make a type of music that no one wants to listen to. I know - I have heard DOZENS OF HOURS OF IT and it isn't really what I'm talking about. The "pop music" patronage system is a little blurrier but does still exist.

The second point is blurrier: what exactly is the commodity that people purchase when they buy an album? Is it the music contained on that album? Yeah, kinda, but you actually get more than that. The music, you can get that for free... this situation is not new. Tapes have available to copy other tapes since... 1980? It didn't kill the music business... part of that was the effect of generation loss on the tape-to-tape transfers, but I think that people, in general, would rather own the album for another reason. That reason: Participation. People like to feel like they are part of the musical phenomenon that's on their headphones. Dig this crazy rhythm: if I encounter an Elvis Costello LP on vinyl, I'll buy it - even if I already own the cd. Why? Because, man! It's Elvis Costello! On vinyl! That's fucking cool. A: I want to support artists that I like (the aforementioned "pop" patronage system), so I bought Death Cab For Cutie when I realized that I liked it. When I get some money I'm going to buy Manitoba and the new Aphex Twin as well. B: I get something that's a bigger, better charge than just having the music in my mp3 folder.

Plus, mp3s really don't sound as good. Usually, it's the rip job and not the compression scheme that's to blame, but for whatever reason most mp3s sound like crap.
