I'm not even a baseball fan (at all), but I still disagree with him on a lot of his points. One of the (few) attractive things about professional sports is that they create modern-day heroes. There's a lot more to the Babe Ruth story than his slugging percentage. People just loved the guy, he made the game what it is today. Hank Aaron, too, for different reasons.
Late in the article he's saying that Kobe Bryant is going to unseat Jordan? Not a fucking chance. Jordan is royalty. He's got a special something that transcends percentages. Tiger Woods has got the same thing. Wayne Gretsyky, too. These are players that are bigger than sports.
I forget who was saying this (Roger Ebert?), but he was talking about Jordan, and he said that even if newer players were better than Jordan, they were never Jordan, because Jordan is a gentleman player. The same thing could be said of the players of baseball's heyday. An even bigger reason why today's baseball players can never be as good in the eyes of the fans as players from back in the day - today, even the fans hate the players. *All* players. Baseball fans have had their love of the game dragged out, stripped and assfucked right in front of them. I can't imagine any player transcending the current distasteful state of baseball. And that's what Bonds (and this author) doesn't seem to understand. |
