Oddly, I got his free Refill, and though it's 7 Mb, I can't see any patches from Reason. Strange. Anyhow, my current thing is to only use stuff I've recorded at home as sampling fodder, because I'm a punk-as-fuck DIY elitist. Also, I was reading an interview with Chris Vrenna, and he had some interesting points - the one that really sent a chilling chill up my spine was the fact that, if you use Reason's Factory Refill or even another commercial Refill, there's always someone in the world that will say "Hey! That's SuperDrums!" I can't explain why that strikes fear into my heart, but it does.
Well fuck, if I had a drumkit, knew how to play it, and had the mikes and other equipment needed to do so, I'd be all over that as well. The thought of somebody recognizing a sample doesn't bother me, though. It would be akin to you going "Hey, thats an 808 handclap!" to FoW.
I don't actually play drums, but I have produced a bunch of albums for other bands in my basement (back when I had one - shit) so I have a few dozen "virgin" drum tracks around. They are all, unfortunately, being performed by guys that only know boom-tap...boom-boom-tap, so if I want something more interesting (which is a question on its own) I have to get all Chemical Brothers and fuck around with them.
Which brings up an interesting point: Why am I ashamed to use software synths and publicly available drum samples? I have no objection to using my rack gear (drum machine, sound modules) and keyboard sounds, all of which can be owned and operated by millions of other artists. Why this stigma attached to all-digital creation?
Because it doesn't feel as real when you're using your mouse? I don't even have any hardware (yes), and I know that one. I wouldn't sequence on hardware, however - computer interfaces are totally suited to that.
There's the next wave of analog snobbery: analog step sequencers over software sequencers. Reasoning: #1 is that, since they use analog circuits, there's an element of randomness (or... entropy?) in the mixsince the beats tend to "drift" around a bit. Fact or fiction? Beats me. One thing I do know is that they output CV (control voltage) so they can sequence old-school gear that doesn't understand midi. Not that I can afford any old-school gear anyways.
Usually, yes, it does (almost any software by Native Instruments or Spectrasonics sounds fucking amazing, however). Especially in the case of analog equipment, which has a warm fat sound that has never been fully emulated by any other digital hardware or software. Many vintage analog synths have even gone up in value from the time of their release. Effects-wise, there is even a bigger gap. If I weren't so incredibly goddamn poor, I'd start hoovering up hardware left and right. Novation K-Station or MicroKorg (doubling as a controller), Virus C, DSI Evolver, Something Analog, Audiophile sound card, monitors, a second screen-type monitor, etc.
They haven't just gone up. They've gone, way, way up. A minimoog once went for $500... now they're 2 grand easy. Depressing. But you can buy broken shit and fix it if you're good with a soldering iron. My ex-wallmate did that with an Avalon preamp/compressor unit (they list for $2000+, he got his for like $200, because it was broken).
Rather than get a nice soundcard, the dude from Four Tet had an awesome idea: a soundblaster audigy has optical ins and outs, and you can get a DAT recorder used cheaper than a really high-end soundcard. Then he just uses the DA converters on that and has his monitors connected to the DAT player. Interesting low-cost solution. I've got to do something about my setup here, I'm still using my computer speakers and am always unpleasantly surprised by the mixes on good equipment. But I, too, am reprehensibly poor, so I'm making do with what I've got for now. It's a good thing software is free!
I could cry that I don't even know scales yet. So far to go
I know them all, but that doesn't mean I know what to play. Good example: Aphex Twin is, so far as I know, pretty much self-taught (and that guy not only writes great stuff melodically/harmonically but he builds his own fucking gear) and he is universally revered. BT has been classically trained since he was a kid and critics hate his music.
Half of what I know about harmony and scales was on this poster that I had when I was a teenager. I never took any lessons, I just learned guitar from that stupid poster. I was at a professional film-composer's apartment last week, and he's got it next to his workstation. It's 9 bucks. |
