The main engines run on liquid fuel, which stays very cold until it gets to the engines, and can be precisely controlled by the fuel delivery system. Solid rockets develop very high temperatures and pressures over a large area, and can't be throttled back in the event of a malfunction. As I said, it's tricky to make them work right. The Soviets, who had no trouble cloning the H-bomb within a few years, took a long time to get the hang of solid-fueled ICBMs.
And you think a flow controller explosion in the Main Engine unit that pierced the fuel tank would not have resulted in a similar catastrophe? For what reason exactly?
I didn't say it wouldn't. My point was that if you had to make a guess, it would be safest to bet against the company using the newest tech.
The solid boosters weren't (theoretically) new tech. They were (again theoretically) based on the Titan III rocket that the Airforce had been flying for years and that the industry regarded as one of the most reliable ever built. In actuality, the boosters were completely new and deeply flawed, but that only came out in the postaccident hearings.
Anyway, whatever. I actually don't believe the premise of the article, that the market knew who the guilty company was. If Thiokol took the heat both times, once correctly and once incorrectly, then I have to wonder if there isn't a bias toward them. As it turns out, they were the least experienced company of the ones listed and nobody thought they'd get the contract to make the boosters. Also, if the shuttle program ended, Thiokol at the time had essentially no other aerospace contracts, whereas Rockwell, Lockheed, and Martin Marietta were well established. |
