An Open Letter to California by creativepig 08/19/2003, 8:45pm PDT Dear California, I have to thank you, because you are making the world a better place. There used to be a time when smalltalk with complete strangers was limited to sports and weather, not for want of other topics, but because (unless you're a Yankees fan) those were pretty safe conversations. But now, politics--perhaps the subject most likely to cause an argument--is also fair game. By starting with the ridiculous political situation in your state, there's time to feel around and get a sense of someone's leanings while both people laugh at the idea of Gary Coleman being governor. "So would you vote Arnold?" you can begin, and after sharing that chuckle, you can decide whether or not to start in on Martin vs. Manley (or Dean vs. Kerry, depending). And there will always be the "Flynt for prez" bailout joke, just in case. For a state that is likely to fall into the ocean, you have done wonders in bringing people together. Love, cp
