I look at the founders of televisionwithoutpity.com writing for newspapers and MSN and even appearing on CNBC (despite being downright pig-faced!) and it makes me wonder why I don't turn a website idea into a career. Forget banner ad sales, it's all about parlaying. The answer is that I don't have the clever idea for a popular website. Regardless, lately I've been talking to Ray and INC about how I'd like to write for a living instead of what I do now, which is freelance graphic design or "multimedia development". The irony of that is both of them being better writers than me, but I have a step up on them in my writing career: I hate my current profession.
One of the reasons I hate my industry is that the floor gets lower every day. On the local job bulletin board that used to be a great source for freelancers to hook up jobs, the average job posting has 400+ views. Assuming that leads to just 100 resumes being sent, you figure at least one of those is a competant student who can do the job for $10/hour. In reaction to this, "Photoshop" is often just tacked onto job descriptions that are clearly for programmers, because everyone knows Photoshop at this point. Here's an actual job listing:
Technologies / Software
Adobe:
•Photoshop
•Illustrator
•Acrobat
Macromedia:
•Dreamweaver
•Homesite
•Flash
Microsoft:
•Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP
•Office
•Visio
•Project
•LRN Toolkit
Hardware
•Wireless LANS
•D-Link Firewalls
•Tape backup devices
•CD Burning hardware/software
•VoIP
•Hub, Routers, Switches
•HP Laser Network printers
Technologies
•(D)HTML
•Javascript
•ActionScript
•ASP
•SCORM/AICC
•Database
•WSH (Windows Script Host)
•Remote management software (Dameware, VNC)
So as I try to hatch my escape plan, I discover another nail in the coffin, a site called designoutpost.com. The concept is that designers apply to be part of the DESIGN TEAM, and CLIENTS present jobs and accompanying prize money, all in a friendly forum structure. The DESIGN TEAM members compete to win the prize money by submitting artwork to the thread, and when the deadline hits a winner is selected and awarded the money. $125 for a logo design is highway robbery, and I can't even ridicule it because some of the designers are pretty good! I look at a thread with 6 designers doing multiple client revisions and first I think about the prize money being too little for the service but then I flip my keyboard when I realize that 5 of these dudes just worked for free. Logos, or even Web layouts.
I think I might even just subcontact to that place the next time I get a graphic job. I can work on my new writing career and collect the first-world design paycheque while some dudes in south asia compete for my $200 and do my work. Then I'm laughing instead of Lou Dobbsing. |
