Lucky for you, the film came out before Ebert went insane. He'd be happy to elaborate.

Marge Gunderson is one of a handful of characters whose names remain in our memories, like Travis Bickle, Tony Manero, HAL 9000, Fred C. Dobbs.
The pregnant cop Marge something in Fargo is in the same league of memorability as HAL 9000? No one would be disappointed if both Ebert and Siskel hadn't insisted Fargo is one of the greatest films ever made, rather than being maybe a notch below Reservoir Dogs. It's forgivable for Siskel who had the kind of brain cancer that leads a person to insist on national television that James Woods be awarded an Oscar for his role in Vampires, but Ebert didn't get his cancer until much later, and even then it was just the regular non-insanity-explaining thyroid kind. I love his reviews but I never understood his fascination with that film. |
