I quite like the gunplay style, but the only decent part of that is the shotgun's fireworks move, other than that, every move is just a flashier looking version of a move that does the job already. Trickster is just rubbish, dodging is easy enough and you never need to wall hike once you get air hike, so it quickly becomes redundant.
You get some unique abilities with two guns later in the game, but I never found much use for them. Like the pistol/shotgun charge attacks, they're only useful if you can jump around doing crazy shit all over the place while holding down the shoot button. This become near suicide at harder difficulties. I've seen expert videos of it being used effectively, but it aint for me.
Swordplay seems the best as it actually has things you can't do without it.
At max level you get some amazingly useful moves, like an ice shield for the nunchucks that makes you (almost) invincible while damaging enemies around you. Plus, you know, the guitar.
Other problem: Only being able to have two of each weapon at once. I'm guessing there's alot of weapons then, as this wasn't an issue in the first game, as there was only 3(?) guns (pistols, shotgun and the demon power gun) and 3(?) devil arms (alastor, ifrit gauntlets and the basic sword). The only thing that worries me about this is the different "switches" that respond to certain weapons but not others, like the Goddess Trial bit, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to set off the levers, I was able to, but only because 2/3 weapons I could choose would work, but it's concerned me for later. I guess it's basically: swords do one sort, everything else does other stuff?
I can understand having only 2 weapons in the quick change slot so you're not juggling trying to find the right one in the middle of combat, but yeah only being able to change your 2 quickslot weapons at statues isn't cool. All weapons can set off all switches. The only thing you'll need specific weapons for are those Combat Arbitrator(?) candle statue things that give you a blue orb fragment when you smash them. Each one will only be vulnerable to one weapon, and as you go on you'll have to get the combo meter higher to break each one until you'll eventually have to pull double or triple S rank, which is impossible for one weapon without swordmaster.
Quick switching for weapons was the one thing Resident Evil 4 desperately needed.
I did quite like the way the intro tricked you into thinking Dante was totally awesome and indestructable only to have him die over and over again in 3 levels time.
That's the only thing I miss about the original: each new weapon you get kicking your ass in some way before you master it. Also: ridiculous boss deaths.
