That's the only thing I miss about the original: each new weapon you get kicking your ass in some way before you master it. Also: ridiculous boss deaths.

Or in the case of Phantom, many ridiculous boss deaths. Dante gets smacked about so much by everything else he doesn't need his own weapons turning against him. I suppose in a way the weapons are giving him a hard time, but being attacked by something that turns into a weapon isn't the same as getting impaled by the thing in the first place (man, Alastor was hardcore, DMC was my first PS2 game and that scene totally got me hooked) :(

I was wondering when they were going to come in, but everything is so OTT that it makes up for it, like Nevan being a total nutbag and then turning into a GUITAR with the power to control electricity and, that other famous mystical element, BATS. So, is the Nevan actually any real use, other than the flying when Demoned up? It seems a bit too gimmicky and unwieldy at the moment. To be honest, I haven't really found any reason to not just have the pistols and shotgun and AgniRudra and Cerberus. Saying that though, experimentation is easy due to being able to replay the first 2 levels over and over with different things.

Particular highlight for me SO FAR: Dante running down the side of the tower being totally bad-ass, I mean, on a scale from 1 to 10, he's a definate Frickin' Awesome, but cheating cos he's using moves from different styles, and I don't see him switching at a statue at any point, and then he leaps from the building to be eaten by a giant flying-demon-fish-whale thing, which turns out is totally retarded and completely shuts down when a relatively blood cell sized thing is *moved* not removed, just *moved*. Oh, and his HEART fires LAZER BEAMS, and not just one sort, but multiple types of beams! Show off, I can't fire any lasers from any appendage, let alone an essential internal organ.

It also worried me when Vergil went superfag at the beginning and made his hair go all queer. And why is Dante's chin so big? I don't remember it being that big in the first game? Maybe getting it shot and punched so much compacted it into a normal size face?

Also you were completely right, it's nowhere near as hard as everyone said it was, not as easy as the original where I didn't die once ever until the second Nightmare (on the second time round as well, oddly), but Shinobi is in a totally different league of difficulty (because Shinobi may be a crazy ninja, but he doesn't like not starting from the beginning of a level EVERY TEN SECONDS).
