Engineering points increase the number of "points" or whatever you can use to buy new weapons at the end of a mission. Science points increase the rate that you can scan ships.
I gathered as much, but wasn't sure if you'd ever really need science or engineering. Maybe I just fucked up, but the angelwing was the only ship to ever get crew experience upgrades, so it didn't require much thought.
Big hint: Scan everything. A lot of really good weapons are only available if you've scanned enough ships/things/whatever that have them or relate to them.
Never did this. Scanning drops drops your shields, which is a death sentence in most battles since shields make up about 90% of your health and you're about 10 seconds away from being crippled once they drop. I guess I should have put all the angelwing's experience upgrades into science (maybe I fucked up, but the angelwing was the only ship to ever receive experience)?
I did scan those alien ships that show up in that "return to earth" mission, the alien ships that teleport and ignore shields. It triggered some blurb from angel about how they can teleport. I never got anything out of it. In fact, the game never again mentions these mysterious unknown alien ships that just pop out of nowhere to attack you in the middle of a mechanoid fight. What the hell?
Would I have gotten those badass Vardrag (god, the annoying voices) cataclysm missiles that kill battleships in one hit if I had scanned enough of them? I gathered the big bang missiles were the best.
Concentrated fire with anti-shield weapons is usually enough to take down most ships' shields, iirc. I generally had 1 or two ships with a lot of anti-shield weapons, and then equipped the Angelwing with a crapton of anti-hull weapons and one or two anti-shield guns. Torpedos also kill shields pretty quick, so make sure you use them whenever you have the ammo.
Yeah, but it always had to be concentrated just to take down one ship's shields. Concetrated fire with 200% energy to weapons. The first couple missions where you just have the angelwing versus shielded ships are a massive pain. You're both firing at each other for 20 minutes with very little to show for it in shield damage. I usually went the other way around and loaded everything with mostly anti-shield weapons and just a couple anti-hull since most ships died in just a few shots once the shields were down.
I though torpedoes were anti-hull weapons (except for those enery torpedoes) that had no effect against shields? I hardly ever carried them, since although they were very damaging, they were also very limited and you usually ran out pretty quick.
I really didn't see the point to anything but anti-shield/hull weapons in this game. Lasers were kind of pointless for anything but destroying shields, which anti-shield weapons did a better job of. Missiles always got shot down by flak, and taking out the flak would require you to close with the ships, which would render your long range missiles useless. Area effect missiles were also most (theoretically) useful against tightly packed ships, which also ment their combined flak ensured no missile would ever get through. Same with any fighter craft which would get slaugheted if there were even one or two flak guns present.
The awar for most fantastically useless weapon goes to those longe range, area effect anti-shield missiles. Any shield damage they did would be completely regenerated by the time you closed. |
