Okay, on the day after Thanksgiving, my dad is buying a new PC. I haven't bought a new desktop since the winter of 03, so I'm a little behind on the current pc-buying landscape.
Essentially, what he needs is to be able to buy the good FPSs from last year (Far Cry, HL2, Doom III) and not have them chug to a halt and make us all forlorn on Christmas morning. SO:
-P4 or AMD? Is 64-bit going to make a difference? Is the extra price of a shit-hot processor worth it? The dude at circuit city was telling him that a Pentium 2.5 GHz was really nice, but that sounds suspicious to me since my 23-month old computer is a Pentium 3.0 GHz.
-Video card? I have a Radeon 9600XT and that shit won't play HL2 at all. Chug city. Recommendations?
-Mobos to look out for? Keep in mind that he's going to go to bed on Friday with this thing in his house, we're not building from scratch. I know that certain mobos are bad for games, or bad in general, but I don't know which.
-There are a couple of different kinds of RAM out now - is there a difference that I should care about?
-He'd like a flatscreen monitor, but he doesn't want to spend over $200 on it. Is this going to buy him a piece of garbage?
Let's say that he has $1000 to spend. Can I get him a semi-customized (that is, factory-built with nicer video card and extra ram swapped in) PC that will run HL2 like silk? GO
(Thanks!) |
