Nickerson said that while many compare the DVD format wars to the battle a quarter century ago between the Betamax and VHS formats, another analogy might be more useful.
"The (video) games industry since the early 90s has had two or three incompatible formats and it hasn't slowed the adoption of game platforms," he said.
Great. :(
Betamax had virtually no exclusive content to make it worth getting a Beta deck as opposed to a VHS deck (Sony didn't own any movie studios at that point). Gaming consoles live or die based on exclusive content. If the Xbox didn't have Halo it probably wouldn't have made it; GTA3 and (God help us) Final Fantasy X sold a lot of PS2s. What are the two HD formats offering in terms of exclusive content?
Blu-ray Exclusive Titles: 20th Century Fox - 20 titles, Sony - 20 titles, Lion's Gate - 10 titles, Disney - 10 titles
HD DVD Exclusive Titles: Universal - 10 titles, Warner Bros. - 9 titles
Both Formats: Paramount - 10 titles, Warner Bros. - 15 titles
I guess Stephen Nickerson is expecting people will buy HD DVD drives in addition to Blu-ray so they can have all those hot exclusive titles from two studios, just like a bunch of people bought Gamecubes for first-party Nintendo games. If HD DVD drives were retailing for a hundred bucks I could sorta see that. As it is I don't see anyone dropping $500 for an HD DVD player when they can get a PS3 for (probably) the same price and get most of the same movies on Blu-ray with more exclusives. |
