If you're anything like me then you probably already know exactly how Tom Chick feels about Game Rankings. What you probably didn't know is that until he decided to write a scathing critique of math and people who think math is better than words for QT3's frontpage, Tom had never actually visited the automated construct that's threatening to make his job obsolete.
You can imagine how disheartening it must have been for him when, after a good many attempts to stump the accursed machine, he eventually came to the realisation that Game Rankings is usually right. But instead of scrapping his planned update in favor of another shoot'emup review cleverly disguised as a story about his imaginary friend, Tom pressed on and ended up writing a piece that unintentionally highlights the stupidity of consulting an individual critic when you could have asked their collective hive-mind.
His examples of ratings injustice include 360 launch forgettables Perfect Dark (82%) and Kameo (81%) getting nearly identical scores, supergame Resident Evil 4 (96%) ranking substantially higher than the still decent Fatal Frame III (80%), and "glib pap" like Burnout 3 (94%) handily outscoring "clever and sharply designed" not-pap like Test Drive: Bargain Bin Derby (74%).
Chick goes on to point out a few of the "unexpected gems" he's unearthed which received only average scores, such as the first truly interactive Jennifer Chambers Lynch movie, Killer 7 (77%), and Koei's eighth (official) sequel to Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, which I guess is the one that finally gets it right? Mysteriously absent from his pile of buried treasures is Dynasty Warriors 5 (69%), possibly because some stupid boy already mentioned how much fun it is if you like that sort of thing and by extension tainted it :( |
