Forbids, sure, but hopefully it also means that AOL will no longer suddenly change the protocol slightly to break Trillian and GAIM. It might have to stay stable for the other legit plug-ins.


But each app you want to deploy to connect to the AIM service needs a an individual key that you get from AOL. All they have to do is shut down the key of any app they find that is multi-network. So if you want to write your own client just for you and your buddies to use, it'll probably fly under the radar. But GAIM or Trillian would still be susceptible to changing protocols.
