Here is my thieving tale. I was taking everything that was not bolted down as a matter of course and I went to do the vampire quest. At one point in this quest you have to hang out at a tavern.
Because the game is so immersive, I sat my character down at a table while I waited for one Imperial Officer to "rouse the guard." There was one guy at this tavern who walks all hunched over that I should mention, but I thought nothing of him.
I'm sitting there, minding my own business when I decide to get up from the table. I hear the owner of the shop go, "STOP YOU WORTHLESS THIEF!" and another guy in the room chimed in with his two cents about stealing. Fine, I thought -- when I hit the space bar to get up, I must have stolen an apple or something. I had a guilty conscience from all my prior stealing. Because I was working so closely with the city guard I didn't want to risk getting hauled off to the pokey, so I reloaded.
And it happened again.
As it turns out, I think the hunched over guy was stealing food! I seem to recall some Internet thread saying that, when hungry, the NPCs will just take food, consequences be damned. I guess it's true. Chopping the fucking guy in two ("relieving his hunch") to avenge the apple's honor wasn't OK in the eyes of the law, though, FWIW. I reloaded again.
