The game industry is about 30 years old (really about 10) and really profitable. What is the problem? Snacks?

My rant was the most boring, except for the others. Partly because I agree with the above statement. There really isn't much about the game industry that I'm really angry about. There are some good games, some great games, and a lot of crap. I ended up talking about the ideology of total simulation, which is a pretty dumb thing to "rant" about, given that it sort of involves thinking about the ontological status of signifiers within semiotic systems, not exactly something to get all worked up about. Or so I thought. A couple of days fighting with people who think that World of Warcraft is just a chatroom with trees convinces me that my topic was more relevant, and controversial, than I suspected.

Also, I gave up 1 of my 5 minutes to Robin Hunicke to do a sub-rant about these goofy pin-up posters that were hanging in the main hall.

Seamus' rant was basically "Developers who complain about not being able to get their innovative idea built should spend some time thinking about the economic context of their work and how to make it financially feasible". Which I guess is a reasonable point. I mean, I'm making games that are pretty unconventional and experimental, and are mostly funded by ad agencies, so I'm constantly thinking about these issues because I want to make weird interesting stuff but I gots to get paid!

Chris Crawford's rant was actually kind of awesome I thought. Because basically he said "Videogames are totally uninteresting, they will always be disposable kids' culture, on the rack next to the comic books and the bubblegum. Games are dead. If you want to make interesting, sophisticated, cool, interactivity, start making interactive narrative like me." So, obviously, completely stupid, but at least a genuine rant!

Jonathan Blow gave a very heartfelt and emotional presentation about creativity in games, game design as self-expression, and how much richer and more complex these issues were than the simplistic idea of "innovation". Not a rant, but nice. I really like Jonathan Blow, he's a great guy.

Jane Pinkard's rant was sort of "don't complain, do something!" Which, ok, I agree sort of, but sometimes talking is good too.

Chris Hecker came up and did a rant that was sort of just a rambling talk about how games are cool. I also admire Chris Hecker a lot.

It was pretty chaotic overall. I don't know if the "rant" format is all that interesting actually.

Later that night I got incredibly drunk and pwned a bunch of no limit donkeys in the "executive suite", that was the high point of my GDC. Also Clint Hocking's talk was really good. Oh, and David Sirlin gave me a copy of his book "Playing to Win" which rocks.
