Women: we're just not offensive enough! by Zsenicorpse 06/29/2006, 12:47am PDT
Frowny.

Most of the women I've met, even most of the self-described feminists, are not comfortable with taking and using power. Andrea Dworkin and I have some strong feelings about stepping to the plate, manning up, and making some sacrifices for a cause you believe in, and women think we're crazy! So of course, abortion policy in the US is going to be made by people who are comfortable with power instead of women.

For a long time I have wondered why it is that vaginas and breasts occupy such a completely unique space on the public/private goods scale. Like private goods, their care and maintenance must be provided by their nominal owner at her own cost; like public goods, they provide public benefits and come under public policy control. For example: women can't play shirts vs. skins volleyball in public! Abortion is another in a long series of issues beloved of conservatives, who, strong believers in the importance of private ownership in every other arena, consider women to be public property and subject to fair use laws.

Of course I'm on the side of women and not crazy woman-haters, but I keep alienating the shit out of women. In the middle of a big big feminist blog hissy party on abortion, I suggested having less sex. Of course abortion should be available to all women regardless of intellectual, moral, or financial considerations, I said, but - girls! - maybe there should also be less having penetrative penis-in-vagina sex. It was worded very carefully, nothing politically shocking, nothing about inculcating abstinence-only lunacy in youths, nothing about punitive anti-sex measures... just the idea that sex is inherently a pregancy-inducing act and should be considered with that point in mind. Nevertheless, THIS WAS THE MOST UNPOPULAR IDEA EVER. I was floored. The blog hissy party moderator actually threatened to ban me for being a troll and a conservative. I was resoundingly shouted down by everyone except the actual conservative trolls.

What?!

Or the time I was arguing about preventing domestic violence. Maybe women should start preventing domestic violence more forcefully... like with guns. That was my idea. Shoot to kill! You don't have to take that shit! And you don't have time to re-educate a fucking felon! Shoot him in the head, ladies! It's not a joke, like ha ha girls with gun ha ha so cool. I mean it: you want to see wife-battering and spouse-rape rates drop like a stone? Start teaching little girls and their moms how to shoot. You can get a gun for the price of an iPod that will serve all your husbandly-rage-prevention needs.

WHOA did women ever hate that idea. Even my mother hated that idea! Women are better than that! They're protectors of life! They could never hurt someone they love! Blah blah blah protect and defend and cherish and love everything but themselves. There was a whole lot of hippie bullshit, which normally I love, but we're talking about stuff where people really get hurt and killed and have been for centuries and it's a known problem with well-explored roots and here I've presented one very excellent and portable solution. Which nobody liked.

So is the shortage of feminine killer instinct a result of nature or nurture?
