I'm a little shocked that the guy who made his name writing violent novels about cyber-samurai suddenly turns around and writes the most aggressively Metrosexual book I've ever read.
I gave up on him somewhere around Virtual Light or Idoru. Once you get past the occasional smart prognostication and neologism, you're left with a thin story and way too much fawning over whatever culture he's writing about (spoiler: Japan).
Neal Stephenson, whose books I like much better and who actually pioneered the cyber-samurai archetype (Gibson's contribution was "cyberpunk"), wrote "Zodiac", a book that might shock you in just the same way. |
