Why does it matter where they came from or who likes them? Very very intelligent, beautiful, and cool people like albums I can't stand. Very very dorky, boring, and stupid people like albums I like.
It matters because your dork friend who likes cool music is an exceptional case. 95% of dorky people don't like cool music and vice versa. These probabilities are why people are careful about sharing their music preferences.
Also, music's harder to discuss than movies, computer games, etc because there's less to talk about. It's just guitars and shit. Most people end up "JUST LIKING IT, OK!?!?" and leaving you with little else but their taste to disagree with. Don't you dare.
In short, music is contentious AND almost impossible to argue about, which explains why finding and preserving common ground is more important in this medium than any other, and why who shares your common ground matters.
Zseni wrote:
Liking good and interesting music doesn't make you a good or interesting person, just like liking bad or boring music doesn't make you a bad or boring person.
No, but it signals that you are probably a good or interesting person to anyone who's watching.

Correlation is not causation. It only helps you identify trends.
Liking the wrong shit will get you misidentified by strangers. If you let people in on your cute stuff after you've established you're familiar and comfortable with a lot of 'safe edgy' material, perhaps they'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Ray's posted some album lists here that have been all over the place and people think less of him because of it. More isn't better when you're sharing musical tastes; it's just riskier. So, be brave and tell us you like K-Pop.
