DAPHNE emulations of Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Cliff Hanger by Fussbett 07/25/2006, 2:02am PDT Daphne is a laser disc game emulator, and now that I'm emucrazy, I sought out some of these nutty timecapsules of 1983. Unlike simple MAME roms, the laser disc games need a laser disc player OR the MPEG rips of the disc. This makes the downloading cumbersome and not widespread. I finally tracked down a Dragon's Lair / Space Ace / Cliff Hanger combo DVD at xbox.udp.at. The site name should've tipped me off, but I wrestled with the ISO file for a long time before realizing that it's an Xbox ISO. So then I used C-Xbox Tools to rip the MPEGs out of the ISO, and after playing with the frame files (which I won't bore you with), I got it working. Man, these games are SHIT! I knew they were shit, and you knew they were shit, but I mean these games are fucking SHIT. But I still had a lot of fun watching the mpegs. My favourite part so far is the instruction screen for Dragon's Lair: Insert Coins. Select 1 or 2 Players. Use the joystick to control the movements of Dirk the Daring. Press the Sword Button to have Dirk use his sword. ...5. Profit! I love that the gameplay itself takes up only HALF of the instruction steps. And of course those steps are also total lies, because you don't control shit. At 8-years-old I could never figure out why Dirk didn't do what I told him to do. It should've been against the law to let 8-year- olds waste money on this chicanery. Cliff Hanger is the best one, as it tries to help the player by displaying a prompt for input and even narrowing it down to STICK or BUTTON. However, they do get carried away with micromanaging the movements. Guessing the inputs to get Lupin into a car sunroof are HAND BUTTON / LEG BUTTON / DOWN JOYSTICK don't come within the first 20 plays. Sanitario666: In unrelated news, I'm downloading 4 gigs of LaserDisk games that have been converted to MPEGS to be run in an emulator ToutSuite: is MACH III there???
