Because I already got burned $35 on that "whoever can build more standoffs/fighters" contest on your recommendation.
Also Laser Squad was and still is a lame excercise in tediously plotting out your grenades' flight paths/mindlessly leading your spawn foward/just pick all AI's fest.
Shit, dude. While like similar action games, we look for completely different things in strategy games, so take my opinion for what it's worth to you. I like STUN better than this game, but I still find Galciv2 compulsively playable.
(And if you can't defend against the AI's fighters and/or standoffs you just suck. And $35? You shelled out for the unnecessary CD?)
"Mostly Positive" best sums it up. The game is overflowing with neat things and has multiple strategies for winning and ways to pull yourself out of a tight jam, but they're accompanied by a just-short-of-equal amount of AI quirks, balance issues, and plain old bugs. On their official forum, they'll be quick to tell you that since the game is so easily modded, you can fix the balance issues to meet your own needs, but the AI won't necessarily use them very well.
The big plus for this game, at least for me, is the lego-esque ship building system. True, there isn't very much you can do in this editor that has any real strategic value, but there's something very satisfying about making your own reall really mean looking battlecruiser to carry your latest weapon tech. This in turn is counterbalanced by the game saving every single ship you create and every slight variation which get carried from game to game and can fuck with new ship designs you create with the same name.
But I must admit that using influence starbases to take over enemy planets without going to war with them is by far the easiest route to victory and probably superior to all others. Whether or not any future patches fix this is irrelevant, the AI currently has an exploitable weakness and the game is broken forevermore. You wouldn't like it. |
