Outkast - Idlewild
Once upon a time when this site still had all the posts that were posted to it, there was a discussion about how much Outkast's last record sucked. For whatever sins the vaguely depression themed Idlewild might have, it thankfully doesn't include drum-and-bass versions of any American musical standards. Unfortunately it contains about 20 horrible skits (or, as they're known in the 1930s, "interludes"), a blues song, and a nine minute meandering closer that I guess is Outkast's stab at post-rock. Look forward to a Do Make Say Think / Andre 3000 double bill next year!
mark: Have you seen the cover of Idlewild? It's one of those holographic type covers where it's big boi from one angle and dre from the other
mark: they hate each other so much they can't even appear on a record cover at the same time
Fussbett: haha THEY DON'T HATE EACH OTHER THEY JUST WANTED TO DO DIFFERENT MUSIC
Fussbett: Not clashin', not at all
Jurassic 5 - Feedback
My long held theory that the only valuable thing they did was their self-titled EP receives further empirical weight due to a guest appearance by the Dave Matthews Band. I assume they rap about keeping things old school, not selling out, and Charlie 2na rhymes "wack" with "back" and then maybe "track." J5's less successful version of Dangermouse, Cut Chemist, abandoned the group and so should you. You'll know how dead beat dad feels: amazing.
J Dilla - Donuts/The Shining
Producer Jay Dee was always willing to take the styles and themes of the past and reinterpreted them. Accordingly, lupussed down in the prime of his life last April, he's just released his second album of the year. Look out, Tupac. "Donuts," released three days before his death, is one of the best hip-hop instrumental records I've heard. The album is hushed and reflective, composed largely of soul samples, and completely free of the kind of distracting quirks that populated Madlib's recent (and still very good) Movie Scenes I&II. There is one idea that Jay Dee uses again and again yet always works -- taking a vocal sample and removing a different portion on each loop which causes the track to bounce a little bit -- see "Stop" for a good example of this. In true beat-tape fashion, it's a whole bunch of somewhat random ideas each no more than a couple minutes in length, but it has much more of an arc than most. Even shorter is "The Shining," which just came out last week. Aside from the unfortunate kazoo looping intro featuring Busta Rhymes, this is amazing production mixed with passable guest rapping. For new comers, the Madlib/Jay Dee combo "Jaylib" is a better place to start. |
