Battlefield 2142 THOUGHTS by Fussbett 10/09/2006, 11:33pm PDT PROS Seeing the player "customize" menu alone makes me realize this game will be interesting to me for a long time. Will I choose claymores or cloaking to round out my sniper? Should I ditch the heavy armor to gain sprint speed? Titan mode is as good as everyone says, and for people like me it culminates with hallway defense like so much first minute of Star Wars, and then defending the reactor core room from the assault like it were some kind of Precinct. Perhaps the 13th one. They've clearly labelled all the awards requirements and how far you're into each, rather than keeping it a secret (which in modern times just means "looking it up on some website"). I love that they've folded the medic abilities into the assault class. I might actually play assault now. Even the base sniper rifles are really accurate. IDing an enemy will keep a visor reticle on them even as they hide behind an object. For a brief while. Knifing someone now "gives you" their dogtags. I don't know exactly how this element with work into the persistant aspect of the game, but hopefully it's huge. I expect, nay DEMAND a giant list of my dogtag collection somewhere. Loving all the scanlines, weapon HUDs and general art. English lion crest on the EU outfit and EU/PAC crest on the gloves are nice. Pretty fast server browser and a BUDDY LIST WHOA 2006. Deploying a parachute is now the jump key. CONS Needs more time in the oven, as should come as a surprise to no one. Particularly bad is the player/wall collision code. Hugging the walls in the Titan can send you into epileptic fits. A new Battlefield game, a new steeper curve. Things are more complex than ever, which I guess is accurate for the future, but again it's even more newbie-impenetrable. Worse, the futuristic aspect means that even I'm confused about basic warfare most of the time. "Oh, this is an APC" I might be heard to say. Then I get killed by a Rorsch SJ-9 and that tells me nothing. Is there a mech in the area? A tank? Is that the name of a sniper rifle? A knife?! The only thing easier is flying. Most people would put this into the PROS list, but after the great fun I had learning flight in BFV and BF2, I'm very disappointed to see that both BF2142 aircraft are highly mouse maneuverable and easy to operate. They're just fast flying tanks. My disappointment stems both from the elitist aspect of the SKILL, but also because piloting was some of the most exciting and terrifying time spent in BFV/2, but in BF2142 it's just another vehicle. The other thing they've simplified is, inexplicably, the pings. Instead of a number you now see a server's latency colour: green or yellow. What? Most of the vehicles look stupid.
