I think the first thing I thought when I heard about it was "finally."
Here are my caveats: Those kids were fucking hicks, and I may be a nerd, but I'm more anti-hick than pro nerd. I went to a high school of 400, and my graduating class was 69 (that's a mathematical way of saying that a lot of people dropped out to work at a fucking SAW MILL). I know hicks, and I don't identify or sympathize with them. Also, I don't think that bullying as such was really what sent those kids over the edge.
One of the key operative distinction between me and a Trenchcoat Mafia kid was that I was going somewhere, and didn't really have to wait that long for it. Those guys weren't going anywhere. Not to foreign countries, not to fancy East Coast colleges, not to big cities, probably not to the next town over. They didn't have anything to look forward to. They were going to have the same life that they were currently living until they died. At that point there isn't really any important reason to put it off. |
