The argument made by the stupid cow is that the guns were the sum total of all that was wrong with Columbine, and that taking away guns will take away Columbines.
The Zseni argument is that taking away guns from people who are prone to senseless destruction just makes them get creative, meanwhile robbing their erstwhile victims of invaluable ways to defend themselves.
Despite how stupid and probably fat that old cow happens to be, the argument that you can stop school shootings by taking away kids' guns is not entirely without merit. Whereas the argument that a couple disturbed slackers could take a break from mailing suicide notes to celebrities and lounging disaffectedly long enough to develop their own, equally deadly, weapon system probably is. What are you thinking -- homemade explosives? Clever tactics to ensure they confront their opposition in manageable numbers? Long spears and tight formations?
And victims sure as hell don't benefit from the force-multiplying effect of guns, since sane non-murderers generally outnumber insane murders by a considerable margin.

Which brings us to: in the meantime, standing social inequalities could use a little work - like the merciless dork-punishing that goes on in too many schools. It's something that was brought up to the school officials and it could have been addressed, but addressing it would have been a big hassle, man. Like, a huge hassle. Who wants to deal with social problems when it's easier to ignore them? Unless they become tragedies, of course. If it's not okay to use violence (shooting up a school), it shouldn't be okay to use violence (beating up a nerd, even if you're the star football player.) The difference is one of degree, not kind; this is one of the underlying problems with the current prison system as well.
The problem with prisons is that ridiculous social policies lead to massive overcrowding. The problem with public schools is that they're under-staffed, under-funded, and full of the stupidest and most dependent people on the planet -- children. It would be nice if kids who display violent tendencies could be sent to a school shrink and drugged-up until they're mostly harmless or sent to live with a new family that isn't so dirt-poor and ignorant. One day it might even happen. But right now, fat cow soccer mom activists are still concerned with triage, stopping the bloodflow by getting the scalpel out of the faggy goth doctor's hands.

In short: gun control may or may not be a good idea, but Columbine doesn't have much to do with it either way.
I think pretty much any situation in which a minority of violent fascists dominates a majority of peace-loving intellectuals makes a compelling argument for the restriction of whichever powers encourage such imbalances. Nuclear arms, large standing armies, the free flow of capital combined with the restricted flow of human beings across international borders, and even personal firearms.

The lesson of Columbine had nothing to do with deadly force and quite a lot more to do with death wishes - however, I meet but infrequently with people who find it horrible even in America, there are people who think they have nothing to live for. I meet a lot of people who seem to think that it's better to make sure those people can't do anything about it. And that seems to me to be a kind of policy development which tends to increase pressure rather than decrease it. Most people, including my two dear respondants, would much rather avoid the discussion and concentrate on the gory details.
I don't live in the US, but I do recognize the multitude of problems facing western democracy. That's why I was one of the 99 people to vote for the marxist candidate (a hospital cafeteria worker who doesn't smile for photographs) in my last local election. But discussing politics with a fat girl over the internet is a little farther than I'm prepared to go for society.

In the end I guess this is one of those quality of life arguments - some people think that saving lives is more important than improving them, and others think it's more important to improve quality of life than preserve lives.
I guess campaigning for gun control instead of something more important like education reform or climate change makes this cow objectively even less helpful than we are, and all we do is play video games!
[Note: I didn't read the article, I just gleaned the important parts from your last post. So maybe I would also complain about it? Who knows.] |
