Civ IV is being labeled a 2006 game due to its Mac release date, which is what my home computer is these days. Civ IV fixes many of the problems of the previous versions and can actually be played quite quickly (3h30m culture win, the other day). It also shows that someone not named Brian Reynolds understands the Civ series and what makes them fun (SMAC, the last playable game in the genre, came out in 1999). The dissapointing thing is that despite learning how to design games, they apparently forgot how to program them. Please, Fraxis, remember to completely destroy objects when done with them. Huge thumbs up, on the other hand, for making everything users might want to change done in Python. That's cool and forward thinking, although it appears that almost no one bothered actually modding the game.
DMC 3:SE is so good it makes you reevaluate the rest of your console gaming experiences. Why pretend to be a football coach when you could shoot a giant demon dog in (one of) its face(s)? Why collect another hat for Jacky to wear during a fight when you could, instead, blow twenty monsters away with a rocket launcher, flip through the air, and, before landing, kill the survivors with a magical electric guitar? These are troubling questions. DMC 3:SE suggests that your entire videogame history (not to mention the many games that composed it) is simply not that important. If it somehow, magically, supported two players (for real, I mean, not the "2nd player can use the shadow!" easter egg), well, then the Next Gen systems would have probably have sold three units a piece.
As for Godhand: currently under the family x-mas tree. I'm away from my ps2 for another week so by the time my impressions are set, this article will probably be long done. I guess I can evaulate the manual and the cover. Face smashing: awesome. Everything else: boring. 3/10. |
